Magic the Gathering Card Game

How do I know what card set my magic the gathering cards are from?

I have some Magic the Gathering cards that don' have a symbol (such as the sword for mirrodin) and when I try to look up the cards online I am always given a list of different sets it could be from and I can't tell the difference. Can anybody make this easier?

1. You can take them to a card shop and have them tell you what set they are from. You can check the date on the cards and figure it out that way. The only sets to not have a symbol was alpha, beta, unlimited, and revised which were the first four sets. Mostly you have to go by the date on the cards.
