Magic the Gathering Card Game

What are some of the flaws with Magic the Gathering card game?

I am currently working on creating a card game similar to Magic the Gathering. In my effort to create a competitive game with MTG I want to iron out some of the flaws that people find with MTG. For instance I have heard that MTG has become less of a strategic card game and more of a race to see whose combo can go off first. I have also heard some people say that Higher level players (PTQ winners) shouldn't be allowed to enter tournaments with low level players who are still new to the game. Can you think of any other flaws or changes you'd like to see in MTG or any fantasy based strategic card game? For what it's worth I've already came up with solutions for the examples I gave above. I'm not looking for solutions. I just want to hear what you think are the problems.

  1. A major flaw is that people are seriously into it.
  2. #1 flaw- if you own them, you'll NEVER get laid. More for me, i guess.
  3. MTG wow that game still exist?
  4. I find that the key cards you need are always in short supply, so you are frustrated in having a really good deck. It also seems to take forever to get things started
  5. My honest opinion on MTG's biggest flaw would be how often they come out with expansions. If you're a casual player you just don't have the time to check through the newest expansion to see what is useful to your decks before the next damn one comes out.
  6. I'm a serious player, and I think the only "Problem" is that the aftermarket drives the price of the killer rares so friggin high. Other than that, I've been playing since '94, and the rules system is kinda like breathing or falling off a log. Also, I despise webdecking. Go online, find the decklist for whatever took Worlds or Nationals, build that exact deck, and win oppressively. It's taken me 2 years of hard work to get to the point where my own decks can keep up with those guys.
  7. I stopped playing MtG around 1995. I've played a few times since then, but only in situations where I don't have to buy cards. For example, we played online with Apprentice for a while, and we played a small 3-man draft league from someone's old cards. I really love card games, but I have no interested in paying for a collectible game where the cards that I used to own are no longer usable or valuable because of the game constantly changing. MtG is not accessible to casual players or people who can't or are unwilling to spend large amounts of money on it. Every expansion that comes out one-ups the previous card set. I got tired of that around Ice Age. Sorry if that's not very helpful, but a game needs to be accessible to people who aren't hardcore.
