  1. 1. There is no best color or color combo. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Just study each color and use the ones you like the best. 2. Card prices largely depend on where you buy. Chain stores like Wal-Mart always sell for MSRP(aka the suggested price) while small card/comic stores usually sell for between $.50 to $1 less than MSRP. Shop around for the best price. 3. The best advice I can give is to define the reason you're playing and stick with it. Competitive players are lousy at casual play and vice versa. It takes alot of dedication to be a good competitive Magic player and casual players often get their feelings hurt when they get beat at tournaments because they equate being the best player in their group with being good in the tournament scene. 4. You get good cards by buying packs and participating in booster drafts. The latter will give connections to good players and that will in turn present better trading opportunities. 5. Stores that run official tournaments usually have lands shipped to them every few months and many just sell them. Also, if you buy a Tournament Pack(they're used for Sealed Deck play) or a Fat Pack you will get 25 lands(5 of each color). Sometimes people sell lots of lands on eBay.
  2. Best colors, none. There is a balance between all colors and when one color starts to get over-powered it is usually adjusted within the next few sets to get the balance back. As for the combos, same thing. I t kind of just depends on what kind if player you are and what colors fit your play style. I would buy from your local small store/hobby shop (keep them in business) Some tips, wait until just before your turn to use any activated abilities or to play any instant spells. Get good card by trading, or buy them from your local shop. I have tons of land cards, where you live I'll send you some. (You have to pay for shipping) And as to playing casual vs. competitive.... I played professionally for 4 years, almost went to Pro Tour Rome. Professional is 99% competitive and 1% fun. I now play casually (for the last 7 years). On average casual play is 50% competitive, 50% fun. I make weak decks and find a way to win with them. For me the fun comes from beating others with less serious decks, but I guess you can say that is competitive as well.
